MODE’s first product, called bSURE, will be a consumer-friendly, easy to use test that will assess bowel health and aid the early detection of bowel cancer. Bowel Cancer (also called Colorectal cancer) is the third most common cancer worldwide and is the second most common cause of cancer deaths in the United States. It is estimated that there will be 146,970 new cases diagnosed in the United States in 2009. Screening campaigns have demonstrated the power of early detection in reducing mortality rates. As a result, all Western and many Asian healthcare authorities are now slowly introducing population based screening. The market implications are significant; already forty million tests ($700M) are performed worldwide annually with potential to grow to 250 million.
Point of Care near Testing (POCT) is the largest growth sector of a $28 billon in vitro diagnostics industry. The demand for home testing is being driven by spiraling healthcare treatment costs and a demand by consumers to become better informed about their health.
